The 4th FAO/SREN Workshop for applied technology related to environmental and pollution issues was oriented towards the application of biogas technology in the next century. Following the suggestions and ideas presented at the 3rd FAO/CNREE Workshop, held in 1992 at the Bundesforschungasnstalt fur Landwirtschaft of the Institut fur Technologie (FAL), in Braunschweig, Germany, it was recommended that the 4th Workshop should take place in Israel. In line with the policy of FAO REUR for future activities of the network in biogas technology and pollution control, the main purpose of the Workshop was to promote the practice of anaerobic digestion by an exchange of ideas and discussion of practical problems, between scientists from EC who are active in the field and engineers who are involved in the implementation of biogas technology. In addition, a number of delegates from developing countries were invited (through the aid of UNDP) to present a picture of the implementation of the technology in their countries. It was the aim of the Organizing Committee to concentrate more on discussion and the evaluation of different approaches to environmental issues and implementation, rather than on frontal plenary lectures. Greater emphasis was placed on economic and commercial aspects. Discussions developed round seven questions that were put forward by a panel, which are presented in the programme. The papers that follow reflect their authors' work, rather than the actual presentations at the Workshop. The Workshop took place in and around the MIGAL Institute in Galilee, and we want to express out thanks MIGAL, Tel-Hai College and the other institutions which helped to make it so fruitful and enjoyable, including the FAO Regional Office for Europe, the Global Technologies Group of UNDP, the Regional Council of Upper Galilee and various Government Ministries of Israel. This book includes all papers that were heard at the Workshop, in the order that they were presented. They appear under the full responsibility of the authors, having been changed only to a standard form, with minor grammatical corrections.
