Academic - Industrial Links and Projects’ implementation

Goal

The central purpose of the proposed forum is to bring together key people from industry and academia in order to share and exchange knowledge and experiences, and to generate cooperative bi- and tri-lateral projects. The proposed activities were designed in an innovative format so that they will foster truly practical outcomes. In particular, the meetings will be designed to produce additional and/or improved follow-up interactions as well as new initiatives among the participants. It is proposed to examine the common interests of these Mediterranean countries and encourage collaboration on projects in industry and academia that are typical to these regions.

Location: Nicosia, Cyprus

• Duration: 3 days
• Proposed Dates: Thursday to Saturday/Sunday, May 23-25, 2003
• Participants: 5-8 from Israel and 5-8 from Crete and up to 30 from Cyprus.
• We are looking for people from industry, academia, agricultural R&D and the agricultural sector, tourism and regional authorities from all three countries. We hope that 40-50 participants will be involved.
• Content: Three main issues of collaborations will be discussed: Agriculture, Tourism and Industry. In each of them, we would like to bring together people from different sectors and the academia to discuss possible collaboration and find ways to examine benefits for the Mediterranean countries and for the development of industries in the regions. The exchange of knowledge will also include best practices of the incubator systems in Israel and Crete and the possible implementation in the “young” incubator in Cyprus.
• Planned Program:
• First day

Arrival by flights from Crete and Israel.

Transportation from Larnaka to Nicosia

Networking (This depends on the flight schedule. We will investigate the least expensive travel arrangements with direct flights, from Crete and Israel.)

Second day

There will be three parallel sessions of the Conference:

• 1) Industrial Applications That Include Knowledge      
• 2) Agricultural Applications with New Ideas
• 3) Tourism and Tourism Planning All Year Long
• In all sessions: Technological incubators and their role in these sectors will be reviewed.

In the evening, there will be a dinner, with local music and dances.

Third day

One-on-one discussions and visits to industries, tourist and agricultural centers or a tour of the region.
The conference will end with a summary and conclusions for follow-up and implementation.

Forth day

Continuation of One-on-one discussions, if needed.
A day of leisure in Cyprus – according to flight schedule.
