Research Groups | Biotechnology and Anaerobic Fermentation | Treating Elephants’ Dung

The aim of the project is to demonstrate at the Safari Zoo in Ramat-Gan a biological technology that combines a struggle for a cleaner environment, with an eye to improving the quality of life by building a Biogas digestion system that treats the elephant dung.

Increasing concern over environmental degradation and the danger of non-sustainable development have enhanced the role of environmental education and the management of ecosystems. The elephant dung must be removed from the elephant house every day, at considerable expense, and dumped, to the detriment of the environment. It is proposed to demonstrate the use of Biogas technology of solid and liquid elephant wastes from the Safari, as a means of reducing environmental hazards. The Safari can have an important role in educating people on how to keep the environment clean and utilize animal dung. Thousands of visitors a year can understand better the uses of organic wastes, and it is estimated that the proposed Biogas Plant will offer classes special activities and expand the number of visitors at the Safari.
