International Activities

In November, Prof. Uri Marchaim participated in the First Open SAIL Conference in Coventry, UK. The annual conference of the network included presentations from the members of the network and invited speakers. The conference dealt with the subject of relationships between universities and industries, which differ between countries, and are changing. How do we decide which structures and policies will best encourage innovation and support the development of our regions?

Prof. Marchaim was invited to present a plenary lecture entitled: “The Technological Incubators, The Israel Experience”.
In addition to the SAIL Open Conference a meeting of the SAIL delegates took place after the conference in which the Network delegates from the 14 regions discussed academia-industry links. They examined the outputs of the secondments visits to Romania of the delegates from the Midlands Region in UK and to Crete of the delegation from North-West Region of Ireland.

InnoRegio – more than a development programme

A delegation of the Inno-Regio program in Germany visited Migal and other Regional R&D institutions in Israel. The visit was accompanied by people from the Ministry of Science, Culture and Sport and included also the Scientific Attaché of the German Embassy in Israel. Mr. Banthien from IFOK consulting company explained how the Network was developed and Prof. Schellenberg of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences gave a short presentation on their scientific activities. The delegates visited the laboratories at Migal and listened to short presentations on various research projects. Some initial common interests were discussed.

The InnoRegio competition, which was initiated in 1999 by the BMBF, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, has brought innovative stimuli to the new federal states in the former East Germany. People from a wide variety of areas, such as science, education and business as well as administration and politics, have joined in innovation networks in order to increase value and competitive ability in these regions. The focal points of the programme are determined by the regions themselves based on their economic and research profiles, as well as their customs and available qualifications. Through the InnoRegio Initiative, 23 networks have been created, each of which has its own particular area of activity, strengthen and further their core areas of competence in many different projects.
This matches the development of the “SAIL” program in the Galilee, which is now developing “clusters” of industries and academia in order to upgrade the economy in the Galilee region.
