The education work presents the achievements of a program at the
Migal research & development institute, where researchers in
biology, biotechnology, agriculture and chemistry supervised talented
high-school students in performing research work and guided them
in preparing individual matriculation projects. Not only did a
number of the students’ dissertations reach a level equivalent
to a Master’s degree and gain publication in the scientific media,
but also almost all of them felt that this was the most meaningful
schoolwork that they had undertaken. The research scientists provided
scientific supervision, with pedagogical support coming from the
Association for the Advancement of Science Education in Galilee.
An important part of the program is to make the Internet and related
multimedia and technology tools familiar to the students, as the
medium for carrying out collaborative, interactive project-base
learning. We teach them how to think, to analyze, to access suitable
information and use it to solve problems. This program could be
used as a model to enhance science education for other countries.
The practical activity consists of experiments in the production
of Biogas from organic wastes. Experiments at different temperatures,
pH levels and loading rates are done. Students
study the production curve of Biogas and the use of other product
s of ferment ation as a substra te for the cultivati on of hothou
se flowers, with and without peat-m oss or organic fertilizer .
