Uri Marchaim, Ph.D.

Prof. Marchaim is a member of Kibbutz Kfar Giladi, Upper Galilee, Israel, and was involved in the establishment of Migal some 21 years ago.
Received his higher education in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Chemistry-Biochemistry.

Postdoctoral research at the Rockefeller University, New York (1972-4). and a Sabbatical year at Battelle’s Columbus Laboratories, Ohio, USA, doing research on control systems for anaerobic digestion (1983-4).

Initiated and became Director (1977) of the National Project “NEFAH - Utilization of Agricultural Wastes”  at the R&D Institute of the Kibbutz Industries Association, Tel Aviv. Conducted research in Methanogenic Anaerobic Digestion of agricultural wastes of cow manure, poultry manure and crop wastes, slaughterhouses wastes etc., for the production of alternative energy, food supplements, plant substrates and hormones. During this time he was responsible for building 3 thermophilic Biogas plants of 200 cubic meter each in Israel and plants in Italy and Yugoslavia.

Consultant to the World Bank, planned a project on resource recovery in India.

Since 1984 at Migal - Galilee Technology Center, continued research on anaerobic digestion, mainly on instant coffee wastes. He was involved in many ecological and waste utilization projects.

Work on the cultivation of seaweeds on non-arable land with spray irrigation system, in cooperation with GOC University in Haiti.

Prof. Marchaim is the author and co-author of over 70 articles in journals and books and wrote two book-review for FAO, on “Biogas Processes for Sustainable Development” and “Biogas technologies: Case studies for success and failure”. He is also the editor of the Proceedings of the FAO\SREN Workshop, entitled: “Biogas technology as an environmental solution to pollution”, published by FAO. He and Mr. Criden have a patent on the Biogas technology since 1983.

Organized and was the chairman of the Forth SREN\FAO International Conference on Biogas in Migal, in 1994, with delegates from 18 countries.

He was involved as the Vice President for Research and Academic Studies in the “Bridging the Rift” Academic Complex at the Araba\Arava on the border of Jordan\Israel. Involved in agricultural & biotechnological development and combating decertification in the desert.

Became the Academic Director of the Dual Diploma Program between AICAT in the Arava and Roi-Et College in Thailand.

Involved in several waste utilization, ecological and algae growth projects and preparing strategies in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean’s, Trinidad and Tobago, supported by the UNDP.

In 2000/1 he studied and received a Diploma of Executive Business Management from LAHAV, The Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business Administration, Tel-Aviv University.

He established the “Association for the Advancement of Science Education in Galilee” which is involved in national and international join science education projects.
This project and extensive innovative work in developing the “Interdisciplinary-Project-Oriented learning” program gained Prof. Marchaim in 1993 the “Rotschild price for Education” in the Israeli Parliament.

He was involved in several education projects in Brazil, the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean’s, supported by UNDP.

Prof. Marchaim was the Chair and organizer of the International Conference “The Art, Science & Technology of Learning: Designing Learning Environments for the 21St Century” in 1998 in the Galilee, Israel.

REUR Technical Series 33
Published: 1994

The 4th FAO/SREN Workshop for applied technology related to environmental and pollution issues was oriented towards the application of biogas technology in the next century.
Following the suggestions and ideas presented at the 3rd FAO/CNREE Workshop, held in 1992 at the Bundesforschungasnstalt fur Landwirtschaft of the Institute fur Technology (FAL), in Braunschweig, Germany, it was recommended that the 4th Workshop should take place in Israel. This book includes all papers that were heard at the Workshop, in the order that they were presented.  They appear under the full responsibility of the authors, having been changed only to a standard form, with minor grammatical corrections.
