Mission

Northern R&D is a division within MIGAL serving as the research and development unit for agriculture in the north of Israel.

Spread across 12 regional and local agricultural councils, the division is responsible for initiating, outlining, coordinating and conducting agricultural research and development in the region.  It is also the largest regional R&D center in the periphery.

Northern R&D works in full cooperation with the various research groups inside MIGAL, agricultural producers in the north of Israel, as well as the Training and Professional Services Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and agricultural research institutes headed by the Agricultural Research Organization - Volcani center.

Northern R&D

R&D research programs are conducted with a project-focused applicatory approach and divided into fields and held in the short to medium term. The activity is concentrated on the development of innovative intensive agriculture in greenhouses as well as open spaces, while adapting to the unique conditions of the field.

Projects revolve around topics such as deciduous plants, drupes, field crops and vineyards, evergreen and subtropical plants, animals, mushrooms, flowers, strawberries and niche crops, bulb and tuber plants, as well as plant protection including environmental issues & aspects.

Northern R&D’s work covers a wide range of geo-climatic conditions - from minus 200m to 1200m above sea level.

The division’s research aims to serve purposes of:

  • Profitable Agriculture: tools for dealing with competitive market conditions, continuous improvement of outputs and their quality and efficient use of inputs.
  • Diverse Agriculture: diversifying the agricultural fields of the farmers growers in the region and adapting to sub-regional conditions and communities.
“Smart” Agriculture: developing products with added value.
  • Precision Agriculture: tools for remote sensing such as input control (fertilizer, water, pests, etc), providing input according to the needs of an individual unit.
  • Sustainable Agriculture: reducing the use of pesticides and agricultural wastes (secondary uses for damaged crops), precise and appropriate fertilizer use, and solutions for farming noise and odor damages.
  • Production Efficiency: tools for improvement.
  • Peripheral Agricultural: assistance for development and conservation of open spaces.
Scientific infrastructure: developing the infrastructure to secure technological mobility in the future.

The activity is funded by The Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael), the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Plants Production and Marketing Board through the Farmers Council and various funds.

Leading Northern R&D is a board of public servants led by The Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael) with a limited managing team and a scientific director appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.  Explore more in the Northern R&D website >>
