The Tel-Hai College and Migal Galilee Research Institute are seeking a postdoctoral fellow in the field of social sciences or agricultural economics to conduct several fast-moving, global research studies exploring how farmers use and benefit from digital platforms in different contexts globally and how they communicate and connect with their local value chains.
The fellow will be based in northern Israel (location is flexible) at the Migal Galilee Research Institute and will conduct research under the supervision of Dr. Adam Abramson in the Agricultural Economics and Sustainability Science Lab.
The project aims to understand better:
1) How farmers around the world use popular social media platforms (such as Facebook and WhatsApp) to receive or share information
2) How agricultural advisors, farmers, input sellers, and produce buyers connect and communicate, and the challenges and pain points that they experience in their daily work
3) How a newly developed digital platform may help farmers connect and share information, and with other value chain players The aim will be to conduct the above research and publish 2-3 high-impact publications on these topics while identifying other promising directions for research
Requirements:
- PhD in a related field (Human-computer interaction, psychology, environmental or agricultural economics, social studies, user research, etc)
- Knowledge and experience in conducting and analyzing surveys
- Strong English communication
- Experience with advanced statistics and qualitative and quantitative data analysis
Preferable to have:
- Experience with user research or mixed methods research (thematic analysis, concept testing, empathy mapping) and relevant software such as DoveTail - Entrepreneurial spirit and interest in the development and growth of digital platforms
- Interest in ICT and digital platforms for agriculture
- Knowledge of relevant computer/data science tools (Python, R, etc), cloud computing, and/or machine learning tools for categorizing open text
- Experience conducting social science research with farmers
Starting date: ASAP
Term: 2 years, with an option for extension
